Fashions ebb and flow in the world of interiors. Yet, bold, beautiful and heritage style is never out of vogue. We headed to London’s Design Week 2024 – the capital’s spring celebration of interior design – to seek out the zeitgeist for residential and commercial decoration projects.

‘One overwhelming theme was proudly on show… Colour!,’ says Lee Clarke, owner and founder of Warner House. ‘In all its many guises – from maximalist patterned velvets in high-octane hues to laid-back linens in all the shades of the rainbow – the design community is loving the role of colour for the home.’

‘Colour is life,’ adds renowned interior stylist and creative Marianne Cotterill, ‘so why wouldn’t you use it in your schemes. I love the joy it brings when you walk into a room.’

Here’s our pick of spring interiors’ trends 2024 that reference Warner House’s love of archive design through a modern lens. Plus give you a little design inspiration on how and where to use them…

Folkloric motifs

Remember the tale of Hansel and Gretel? There’s a chimerical mood for folklore, fables and art in room design right now. One that visually tells a story of days gone by through pattern, craftsmanship and design.

Trailing floral block prints, embroidery, crewelwork, tapestries and decorative hand painted furniture are at the heart of this charming feel. All combined to make a space feel like it has been collected together over generations. This fairytale look works particularly well in period country properties, such as cottages and farmhouses, where original windows, beams and quirky architectural features set the scene for the narrative.

@mymulberryhouse used Amoli Rouge Linen Mix Fabric (shown) in her Georgian home in Surrey. The fanciful Tiger Lily tree of life and floral trail appears on curtains, four poster tester and end-of-bed bench alongside the grounding and tactile Campbell Birch Plain Linen Fabric (shown). Look up and you'll see the room topped off with a golden starry ceiling that dances with light come nighttime. Try Starlight Ivory Wallpaper.

Blowsy florals

The romance of the floral remains true to form as one of the perennial fashions on the home design scene. Nostalgic and romantic, English bouquet designs are unashamedly decorative and play homage to the enduring appeal of country house style.

These historic designs aren’t for the faint hearted. Whether used in bijou attic bedrooms or stately boudoirs, they are powerful, all-encompassing and mesmeric. The pleasure is in their artistry and composition.

Look to Grand Bouquet Vintage Cotton Fabric and Grand Bouquet Vintage Wallpaper for inspiration (shown here in the stately setting of Broughton Hall in Yorkshire). A blowsy rose and tulip bouquet floral with frivolous intertwining ribbons, it is depicted in classical blues and pinks printed onto a fine cotton with a glazed chintz finish and has been supplied by Warner since 1895.

Style alongside handsome dark woods or white-washed tongue and groove depending on your take.

Fantastical beasts

Fantastical beasts with whimsical faces and playful postures bring a new take to the exotic animal genre. From cheeky monkeys to smiling cats, these jungle-inspired looks reference sentimental far-flung lands.

The appreciation of these illustrative designs is down to their pared back palette that cosies up happily with a neutral-loving scheme whether classic or contemporary. Zanzibar Ochre Wallpaper is a good example (shown) with its on-trend, middle-tone yellow ground.

@thegarthhome chose the wallcovering and matching chintz cotton fabric for a bathroom transformation project. This contemporary toile design depicts a lush scene of jaguars, monkeys and parrots, originally popular during the Napoleonic reign. For balance, the wallpaper was hung above dado height paneling and the blind lined with a complementary stripe for added pattern and panache. Gold accents echo the honeyed hues.

Mauve mood

Burgundy? Mauve? Rose? Thought to be passé until recently, these warm, earthy and gentle tones are back firmly on decorators’ wish lists. They pair well with dusty pinks, zinc greys, comforting taupes and, of course, white for an easy-on-the-eye tonal room scheme.

The magic of these pinky-red-purples is in their liveability and adaptability. They feel modern rustic when teamed with sisal, wool and roughened wood textures, or elegant and feminine when partnered with white-painted Scandi style furniture, marble surfaces and breezy linens.

@gassonphillipsinteriors used Bibi Rose Wallpaper (shown) on the landing of a Cotswolds’ renovation project. The striking motif is inspired by the Ikat patterns from ancient silk workshops. It's charismatic and bold colouring made it an ideal wall choice to lead into a sloped-ceiling bedroom painted in a complementary shade.

Spirited stripes

Line up, line up! With razor edges for sartorial eccentricity or quintessentially wide for circus-style joviality, there is no end in sight for the much-loved stripe. Blending modern and traditional aesthetics, this season’s spirited designs are all over sofas and occasional chairs, tablescapes and cushions. Frilled striped trims on tablecloths and cushions, and seating covers with loose gathered showy skirts, up the froufrou factor.

Stripes have long been a garden, conservatory and poolside classic and, with innovative outdoor fabrics now widely available, both nature-inspired and plucky colours are the way to go for al fresco living this summer.

Head into the fresh air with Holkham Willow Outdoor Fabric (shown) and Outdoor Cushions in Orange, Amber, Scarlet or Navy, amongst others, to instantly update and suit your setting. With clever properties, such as high light fastness, good UV resistance, water repellency and Teflon stain resistance, these fabrics are practicality personified.

We hope you’ve been inspired by our Spring highlights for 2024. Now’s the perfect time to refresh and restore indoor and outdoor spaces in readiness for the season ahead.
